With our Season changing to Hot Weather, it is a good time to review heat stress symptoms and prevention. When the body is unable to cool itself by sweating, several heat-induced illnesses such as heat stress, heat exhaustion or heat stroke can occur.
Factors Leading to Heat Stress
High temperature and humidity, direct sun and heat, restricted air movement, physical exertion, poor physical condition, some medications and intolerance to working conditions.
Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion
Headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
Weakness and moist skin
Upset stomach or vomiting
Changes such as irritability or confusion
Symptoms of Heat Stroke:
Dry, hot skin no sweating
Mental confusion or losing consciousness
Seizures or convulsions
